My backpack doesn't have a bottle holder and it makes juggling my coat or umbrella and my water bottle or my travel mug that much harder. I really like cute water bottles so I decided to make a way for it to be easier to take to class.

needle & thread
optional: a sewing macing
optional: an elastic headband
step 1. measure the desired height and width that you would like the pocket on your backpack to be.
step 2. add two inches to the height and one inch to the width you just measured for your pocket and cut the fabric those dimensions. to find the width the elastic should be, subtract half an inch from the width you measured for your pocket [but make sure it'll fit your bottle.]
step 3 . fold the fabric down a little more than the height of your elastic and sew it down.
step 4. using a safety pin, push the elastic through the flap and sew the ends of the elastic to the ends of the flap.
step 5. pin the bottom of the pocket to the bottom of the the side of your backpack and sew it down. [make sure when it's pinned that it's not inside out.] flip the pocket up and sew the sides to the backpack.
optional: I added a safe guard in case I had a bottle or something that was too loose for the pocket. I cut a piece of an elastic headband the width of my pocket and sewed it a few inches above my backpack's new pocket.
I bought my gold travel mug from Starbucks, but it looks like gold isn't being sold anymore. if you want it feel free to to get in white.
